Plant of the Week - September 15th 2018

I have chosen this plant before, because every time I see it, it really makes the area where its planted ‘pop’!  And, I have a sneaking suspicion it may wind up being the 2019 Perennial of the Year…but we’ll see.  It is  Aralia c. ‘Sun King’; a perennial that grows about 4-5’ tall and 3’ wide, with bright gold compound leaves.  It’ll grow in full sun, but also performs well in shadier conditions…only take a few hours of sun to keep that bright golden yellow color.  As a bonus, the foliage gets topped off (later in the season) with 2' tall spikes of small white flowers followed by ornamental black fruit.  Hardy to Zone 4 (3) and deer resistant, this bold perennial is a great show, sun or shade.
