Plant of the Week - September 22nd 2018

Sometimes finding perennials that perform well in the shade (and flower as well) can be limiting.  We looked at Sun King Aralia last week.  Well, check out this week’s choice; Tricyrtis, or commonly known as Toadflower or Toad lily.  It grows quietly all summer, but once September rolls around, small, orchidlike flowers, speckled with white and shades of purple, show up above the tall stems of glossy green foliage. Most other perennials have finished blooming. But this beauty is just getting started.  Hardy, loves ravines and woodland edges, and pretty much carefree (although deer will browse them).  Plant Toad lilies next to the walkway or edge of the bed so you can enjoy their wonderful small ‘orchidy’ flowers.
