Plant of the Week - Kentucky Derby Edition

Hopefully, next weekend will be the running of the 147th Kentucky Derby, one of my favorite sporting events to watch! So, to get ready for next weekend’s event, we have 2 plant picks! First pick: Kentucky Colonel Spearmint – Over 4,000 pounds of the Colonel will be used to make mint juleps over the 3-day weekend. And of all the mints, Kentucky Colonel has the best foliage, and as far as I am concerned, the best flavor.18-24 inches tall, white flowers (pollinators love them), deer and rabbit resistant, and yes, very aggressive. So, grow the Colonel in a container. Remember, mint was meant to be grown in containers. Second pick: Well, it is the Run for the Roses, so let’s look at my absolute favorite rose, ‘Easy Does It’. Here is a floribunda rose is like a fruit salad for the landscape; fragrant clusters of swirling shades of mango-orange, peach-pink and honey-apricot form blooms that are scalloped, ruffled, and classically spiraled, rounded, bushy plants with super glossy green leaves, proven disease resistance, vigor and flower power. Totally my favorite pick of roses.‘ And they’re off!”
